Vintage postcard design from Arbuckel's reproduced by Legends of America. Text on back: Once home to Native American mound builders, Iowa was first visited by Europeans in 1673 when French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette arrived. Permanent European settlement began in the early 1830s. Iowa became part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The Territory of Iowa was established in 1838 and Iowa became a state in 1846.
