Text on back: The Hawaiian islands were first settled about 1500 years ago by Polynesians who navigated the ocean using only the stars. They were then isolated from the rest of the world for at least 500 years. Europeans arrived in the late 1700s and the Kingdom of Hawaii was established in 1795. More immigrants arrived in the next years to work the plantations. The islands became the U.S. Territory of Hawaii in 1898 and became the state of Hawaii in 1959.
